Background to the Harlem Is…Legacy Project
Arts have been a defining part of what Harlem Is... Through the arts, individuals explore what it truly means to be creative and alive, to be part of a community and reflect a diversity of cultures and visions. Through the visual arts, theater, music, dance, film and the written word, many forms of expression have evolved to tell both individual and collective stories. The arts have been and continue to be an integral part of shaping community, identity and social change in Harlem.
Harlem Is…Legacy is many things.
— a celebration of seven creative individuals who have contributed to community and the arts in making Harlem what it is.
—a personal account of the lives of people whose lived experience extends into the work they do to shape the lives of other people, mostly of the next generations to follow.
—a commitment that they all share to continue to build community and recognize the talent of others who help shape the future.
Individuals featured in Harlem Is…Legacy
